Can Lasers Work Effectively for Hair Removal for Clients With Dark Skin?

Absolutely.

The myth is that permanent hair removal is not possible because operators have to keep the laser wavelength at a low level to avoid skin damage, therefore never strong enough to kill the hair at it's root level.

It is true that there is a risk faced by people with dark or black skin because lasers respond to the pigment in hair. It requires an experienced and highly competent operator with equipment designed to emit the correct type of beam to make sure that the laser does not affect the client's skin, resulting in burns, loss of skin pigment (hypo-pigmentation), and potential scarring. For darker skin types appropriate fluences are generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the epidermis.

People of color such as African-American, Asian, Hispanic, Mediterranean, European and Middle Eastern descent must be treated with equipment with a long-pulse Nd:YAG laser.

It is important to note that laser treatments can deal with problematic ingrown hair that is common for people with dark skin and curly hair.
