Laser Hair Removal Services

LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

Laser treatment is a highly effective method to quickly and safely remove unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin.

The laser system emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle. The laser energy is transformed into heat which can disable the follicle, leaving the surrounding skin unchanged. The skin is further protected during treatment by a dynamic cooling process where cryogen is sprayed onto the skin, cooling the upperlayers and providing patients with increased comfort.

Laser Hair Removal process

As to how many treatments you will need, this varies for each individual depending on the amount of hair treated and your skin type and hair coloring. Hair grows in cycles, and it is necessary to treat these follicles when they re-enter the growth phase. Most people require 5-8 treatments as the process is only effective on hair during the anogen phase of the hair growth cycle. FIND OUT MORE

Treatment procedure

Treatment procedure of Laser hair removal

Generally the treatment will include:

  • Safety eyewear to protect the patient's eys from the intense laser light during the procedure.
  • A probe with a distance guage will be used; only the distance guage touches the skin to deliver the laser light. A light spray of coolant on the skin will be felt just before each laser pulse. We replace the distance guage between treatments and each guage is thoroughly disinfected before re-use.
  • Most patients experience little discomfort because of the dynamic cooling device. The degree of discomfort varies with each person depending on his or her sensitivity. You will have a good idea of your own sensitivity after the test patch is done. Topical anesthesia may also be requested; be sure to discuss this with our laser specialist during your initial consultation.
  • The procedure can take as little as 10 minutes or up to an hour, depending on the area treated. All patients can go home immediately after treatment.
  • The treated area may become pink or red within about 15 minutes of treatment; this may last from a few minutes to many hours or several days. This is normal and it will subside.

Pre-treatment guidelines to ensure best results

  • Avoid the sun 4-6 weeks before and after treatment until your specialist allows it.
  • You MUST avoid tanning, bleaching, plucking or waxing hair in the area to be teated for 6 weeks prior to treatment.
  • If you have a history of perioral herpes (cold sores), and antiviral therapy may be prescribed.
  • If you are tan or have a darker skin type, a beaching cream may be started 4-6 weeks before treatment. You should discuss whether this option is necessary with the laser specialist during your initial consultation.
  • See pre-treatment guidelines.

Post-treatment

After a treatment the skin may be red and bumpy because it is irritated, and this is absolutely normal. For a small percent of people the treated area may feel like a sunburn for a few days. We recommend protecting the treated skin from the sun, and that you should also avoid activities which may irritate the area or induce heat for 24-48 hours immediately after treatment, such as exercise, saunas, hot tubs. The area should be moisturized with clear aloe gel. See also Post-treatment Guidelines.

If the area feels warm to touch within the first 24 hours after treatment, apply ice to help promote healing and comfort.

You will leave the treatment with smooth skin. There is however 3-5 mm of lasered hair below the skin surface which has to shed. When the hair begins to work its way out to shed it appears to be growing again. This is not re-growth but is actually the dead hair falling out. This process usually takes 2 - 3 weeks.
